Begin with the current network
Use WMATA maps and schedules for the journey you need today. Save the exact origin, destination and travel time rather than a generic neighborhood-to-neighborhood estimate. Check the return service and the entrance you will use at each end.
Two names worth checking closely
Georgetown has no Metrorail station, so a home or destination there requires a deliberate walk, bus or other connection. Woodley Park–Zoo/Adams Morgan station is not in the middle of Adams Morgan's 18th Street activity. In both cases, inspect the actual route instead of assuming a familiar neighborhood name means the train arrives at its center.
Rivers and parks change the geometry
A short straight-line distance across a river or park edge does not establish a short walking route. Follow the bridge, crossing or public entrance you would actually use. Try it with your ordinary load and check accessibility information if you need a step-free route. The uphill return can feel different from the outward walk.
Nearby communities need the same test
For Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, Arlington, Alexandria or Falls Church, plot the home-to-station leg separately from the rail journey. Use current bus information rather than old route numbers. The full transportation guide explains the corridor choices and helps you compare complete routines across the District, Maryland and Virginia.
