Start with the office entrance, not “Washington”
A workplace near Farragut, a campus in Georgetown, a destination in Navy Yard and an office in Rosslyn produce different searches. Put the actual entrance on WMATA's current network map, then identify a direct route and one reasonable alternative. Crossing the Potomac or changing lines may be perfectly workable, but should be a deliberate part of the choice. A neighborhood's reputation for being convenient does not tell you whether it is convenient for your destination.
Compare three kinds of home base
Begin with a home close enough to walk to your main destination, a home near a useful Metro station and an option in a nearby community that offers a housing benefit you value. For example, a Red Line routine could produce a different shortlist from a Green Line routine. Do not compare rents first and discover the required transfer afterward. Save the exact itinerary and the station entrance you would use alongside each property.
Read the station name critically
Georgetown does not have its own Metrorail station. Woodley Park–Zoo/Adams Morgan is not a station in the middle of Adams Morgan's 18th Street activity. In either case, investigate the walk or current bus connection rather than assuming a neighborhood name implies a platform at its center. Hills, bridges and park edges can lengthen a journey that looks short on a simplified map. Try the route in both directions during your scouting visit.
A first neighborhood visit should include a small errand
Use Destination DC's neighborhood directory to choose an area that interests you, then add the ordinary routine. Around Capitol Hill, compare the candidate block with the route to Eastern Market or your actual station. Around Columbia Heights, distinguish the shopping corridor from the residential street and the walk toward the park. Buy groceries, return to the building and check the entrance. This makes the visit about living there rather than completing a sightseeing itinerary.
Crossing the boundary changes the government
Arlington is a county; Alexandria and Falls Church are independent Virginia cities. Bethesda and Silver Spring are unincorporated communities in Montgomery County, while Rockville is a municipality. Postal names can extend beyond the jurisdiction you expected. Confirm the actual address before looking up taxes, parking or local services. A metropolitan housing search is not a single administrative system, even when the same Metro map connects the options.
Finish with a week you can explain
Write down the commute, grocery trip, one evening outing and one outdoor destination for each candidate. Include the return at your actual hour and any parking costs you would retain. If renting a lower-level rowhouse unit, give light, water-entry questions and access their own inspection time. If choosing a larger building, inspect packages, elevators and recurring charges. The strongest shortlist connects the appeal of an area with the specific home and journey you can verify.
