Mar Vista Neighborhood Guide: Schools, Parks, Safety & Kids’ Activities

Mar Vista’s school programs, recreation center, Sunday farmers market and branch library, with local crime-data sources and the Bundy/Centinela bus connection.

Mar Vista brings together a recreation center with sports courts and a pool, a Sunday farmers market at Grand View and Venice, and a branch library on Venice Boulevard. This guide covers those public resources, local school programs and bus connections through the neighborhood.

Schools

Mar Vista has several LAUSD elementary-school options, but their programs and academic results vary. Use the Los Angeles school directory to search schools by name, school type and grade. The directory shows schools within city boundaries; it does not confirm attendance zones or admission eligibility for a particular home.

Mar Vista Elementary

In California’s 2024–25 Smarter Balanced testing, 79.9% of Mar Vista Elementary students met or exceeded the standard in English Language Arts and 86.1% did so in mathematics.

Beethoven Street Elementary

Beethoven Street Elementary serves TK–5, is designated a School for Advanced Studies (SAS), offers STAR after-school programming and instrumental music, and performed above LAUSD averages in both English and math in 2024–25. In LAUSD’s 2025–26 parent survey, 94.3% of responding parents said their child felt safe on school grounds, compared with an elementary-school district average of 87.4%.

Grand View Boulevard Elementary

Grand View Boulevard Elementary offers a Spanish dual-language program, before- and after-school programs and arts programming. Its 2024–25 academic results were below LAUSD averages.

Mark Twain Middle School

For middle school, Mark Twain Middle School serves students living within its attendance boundaries and also offers specialized pathways, including School for Advanced Studies and the Individualized Honors Program (IHP). IHP admission has separate academic eligibility and assessment requirements.

School assignment and program admissions

LAUSD’s Resident School Identifier identifies assigned schools by residential address. Specialized programs, including SAS and IHP, have separate eligibility or application requirements.

Parks & playgrounds

Mar Vista Recreation Center at 11430 Woodbine Avenue combines recreation facilities and organized programs on one public site.

The County’s city-operated facility listing identifies tennis and basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, children’s play areas, a pool and gymnasiums. The recreation center and the pool can have different operating arrangements; the facility listing provides a contact for questions about using them.

Recreation programs and registration

For a child’s class or sports registration, contact Mar Vista Recreation Center at 310-398-5982. Ask for the current session’s activity, age group, fee and registration date; a facility with a court or pool does not imply that a particular lesson is available year-round.

Community spaces and activities

Mar Vista Farmers Market

The Mar Vista Farmers Market operates on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grand View and Venice Boulevard. Produce and prepared-food vendors share the market with neighborhood activities.

The market lists a free weekly craft workshop, face painting on the last Sunday of the month and a kids’ cooking class on the fourth Sunday. The cooking program also includes an adult demonstration on the second Sunday.

Library activities

At 12006 Venice Boulevard, Mar Vista Branch Library lists Toddler Storytime for young children and caregivers and a Teen Volunteer Club for grades 6–12 in its October 2026 calendar.

The branch also provides a Student Zone, Teen Quad and sensory kits.

Local crime information

Mar Vista is served by LAPD’s Pacific Division, and LAPD provides public crime-mapping resources that allow users to review reported incidents by location, crime type and time period.

When checked on October 18, 2026, LAPD’s page carried a notice that its CrimeMapping feed was being updated. The selected geography, reporting dates and coverage matter when reading those results; an empty map does not establish that no incidents occurred.

Transportation and commute

Big Blue Bus Route 14 follows Bundy Drive and Centinela Avenue through this part of the Westside. Centinela and Venice Boulevard is one of the operator’s published timetable points in Mar Vista.

The route connects with the E Line at Expo/Bundy Station and continues south to the Culver City Transit Center area at Bristol Parkway and Centinela. The timetable effective August 9, 2026 provides separate weekday and weekend service tables.

The operator’s Route 14 map and timetable show both directions and mark school-only trips separately. Our Los Angeles transportation guide covers other bus and rail connections across the city.
