Chugach State Park rises beyond Anchorage with mountains, valleys, lakes, and trails that support very different levels of outdoor exploration.

Its proximity to the city makes the landscape accessible, but individual routes remain genuine mountain outings with changing weather and terrain. Choosing one area deliberately is more useful than treating the entire park as a single stop.
Select an official trailhead and route suited to your experience, then check current conditions and restrictions. Carry appropriate equipment, follow wildlife guidance, and allow a generous margin for weather, navigation, and travel back to the city.
