Eastern Promenade

The Eastern Promenade places paths, lawns and open views along Portland’s hillside above Casco Bay. In 1905, the city commissioned Olmsted Brothers to develop the landscape, with John Charles Olmsted and Henry Hubbard leading a design that followed the natural topography.

The plan introduced hillside pedestrian paths and separated areas for sports, play and quieter recreation. Trees were arranged to frame the views rather than block them. That combination of landform, planted edges and open water helps explain the promenade’s character as both a neighborhood park and a designed scenic landscape.
