Harry S. Truman Historic District preserves the Independence neighborhood associated with the former president’s domestic life.

Historic houses and surrounding streets place the Truman family home within the wider community where Harry and Bess lived.
The photograph shows an actual historic house within the district. Plan an exterior neighborhood walk using National Register boundaries and current National Park Service visitor information. Individual house tours, including the Truman Home, have separate ticket and access arrangements. The surrounding residences remain private, and designation provides no general admission to interiors or gardens. Stay on public sidewalks and respect residents’ privacy.
