Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge near Anniston protects an unusual upland longleaf-pine landscape on former military land.

Forest habitats and conservation work provide opportunities to understand a southern ecosystem shaped in part by fire.
Check current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maps, alerts and permitted routes before arriving. The photograph shows the forest landscape. Former military areas can contain hazardous remnants, so stay within explicitly authorized public areas and never handle suspicious objects. Prescribed burns or habitat management can close routes, and collecting plants or disturbing wildlife is prohibited.
