Newark Earthworks preserves parts of an immense Indigenous ceremonial landscape in Newark and Heath.

Newark Earthworks

The surviving Great Circle, Octagon and other earthworks reveal sophisticated planning and relationships between geometry, gathering and the movements of the sky.

The photograph shows an earthwork wall and ditch within the wider complex. Use Ohio History Connection’s current map to select a unit and entrance; the surviving sites are geographically separate. Stay on designated routes, respect archaeological ground and do not collect or dig. Guided programs and visitor-center access have separate schedules.
