Smithsonian American Art Museum

A free downtown Washington museum presenting American art across centuries, with changing exhibitions and accessible audio guides.

Smithsonian American Art Museum

The Smithsonian American Art Museum offers a broad view of American art in downtown Washington. Its collections and exhibitions connect work from the colonial period to the present, providing many possible routes through the country’s visual culture. A visit can focus on a single exhibition or become a longer exploration across different media and generations.

The museum’s main building is at 8th and G Streets NW in Penn Quarter. Free audio guides for selected works are available in English, Spanish, American Sign Language, and descriptive audio, giving visitors several ways to engage with what is on view. Exhibition changes can affect access to individual galleries, so check current displays when coming to see a particular period or artist.

General admission is free and does not require a ticket. Allow time for security screening and travel with a small bag, since there is no coat check or bag storage. Ramps flank the 8th and G Streets entrance. The museum’s Renwick Gallery is a separate destination near the White House, with its own exhibitions and visiting arrangements; this listing covers the downtown main museum.
