South Puget Sound Wildlife Area’s Lakewood unit preserves open grassland within an urban setting.

A paved walking route and wildlife-viewing opportunities introduce a remnant of the prairie ecosystem that once covered a much wider area.
The photograph shows an actual tree and grassland setting in the unit. Use the Phillips Road access and check the wildlife agency’s current pass requirements before parking. The site closes during darkness and has no public restroom, so plan facilities elsewhere. Follow designated routes and posted conservation notices. The interpretive center and fish hatchery have separate operating arrangements from a walk through the grounds.
