Walnut Canyon National Monument protects ancestral cliff dwellings within a dramatic canyon east of Flagstaff.

The landscape offers a close view of how a community made use of sheltered rock ledges and the resources of the surrounding plateau.
Choose a trail using National Park Service guidance rather than assuming all viewpoints involve similar effort. The Island Trail descends many stairs, while rim-based options offer a different experience. Check current closures and weather before setting out, stay on designated paths and treat the dwellings as protected ancestral places rather than structures to enter or climb on.
