Streetcar-era houses and neighborhood landmarks in central Austin

About Hyde Park

Hyde Park’s residential streets developed around a streetcar suburb platted in 1891. Large early houses, later bungalows, Avenue B Grocery and Shipe Park remain recognizable parts of the neighborhood, while the local historic district records the older area’s architecture and development.

A suburb built around the streetcar

Monroe Martin Shipe platted Hyde Park in 1891 and promoted it as an affluent suburb, with a streetcar connection to Downtown. Churches, schools and shops were encouraged to locate alongside the homes.

Early sales were slower than expected, and the neighborhood’s development shifted toward smaller houses for middle- and working-class residents. Its biggest construction boom came between 1924 and 1935.

Large early homes and a later wave of bungalows

The local historic district contains houses whose styles mark the transition from the Victorian period into the twentieth century. Bungalows from the later building boom add another layer to the residential streets.

The city identifies Avenue B Grocery, Hyde Park Presbyterian Church, the fire station and a moonlight tower among neighborhood landmarks. Its historic-property map gives the district boundary and individual property designations.

Shipe Park on Avenue G

Shipe Neighborhood Park is at 4400 Avenue G. At roughly 2.6 acres, it is a small neighborhood park within Hyde Park’s residential setting, rather than one of Austin’s larger destination parks.
