About Downtown

Downtown Bridgeport has apartments above the historic Arcade Mall, library services on Broad Street and train and ferry connections along Water Street. McLevy Green provides a small public gathering space among the commercial blocks. For a larger grocery shop, Fairfield Avenue leads west to Food Bazaar outside Downtown.

Apartments above the Arcade

The Arcade Mall at 1001 Main Street combines a historic enclosed shopping passage with apartments above its commercial spaces. The operator’s published examples include a 751-square-foot one-bedroom apartment. Listed features include central heating and air conditioning, high ceilings, stainless-steel kitchen appliances and bamboo flooring.

The same operator’s Golden Hill apartment listings show one-bedroom examples of 592, 636 and 870 square feet and a two-bedroom example of 1,205 square feet. Both properties list an atrium lounge and free package storage. These are examples of layouts and facilities; the published units and asking rents can change. Leasing inquiries go to 203-333-2250, extension 1.

Grocery trips on Fairfield Avenue

Food Bazaar’s Fairfield Avenue supermarket is at 2145 Fairfield Avenue, west of Downtown. Its store phone is 475-225-8262. It is an option for a larger grocery shop rather than a store within Downtown’s Main and Broad Street blocks.

GBT Route 5 leaves the downtown bus station from berth B-2 and follows Fairfield Avenue toward Black Rock. Return trips run toward Downtown via Fairfield Avenue and State Street. The operator publishes separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday schedules, with shorter Sunday service hours than on weekdays.

Walking on to the Port Jefferson ferry

The Bridgeport ferry dock is at One Ferry Access Road, next to the rail station and within walking distance according to the ferry operator. Walk-on passengers do not need a sailing reservation, but must buy a ticket before boarding. Tickets are sold at the terminal booths and through the operator’s webstore.

The ferry company has no parking lot of its own in Bridgeport. It lists nearby alternatives including Imperial Parking Garage at 10 Middle Street and Lafayette Square Garage at 314 Fairfield Avenue. Its terminal shuttle can be requested at 203-836-9955 for the designated parking locations. Those garage addresses are distinct from the ferry boarding entrance.

Printing documents on Broad Street

Burroughs-Saden Main Library at 925 Broad Street supports remote printing from a phone, laptop or desktop computer. The library’s published rates are 15 cents a page for black-and-white printing and 50 cents a page for color. Its printing page links the specific Main Library printer as well as printers at other branches.

After sending a document to the Main Library printer, collect it during the building’s opening hours. At the Print Release Station, choose “Release a Print Job,” enter the email address used for the submission, select the job and pay to release it. The main library’s reference desk is 203-576-7400, extension 409.

McLevy Green and local events

McLevy Green sits at Broad and State streets beside historic McLevy Hall. It is a small downtown public square, rather than a waterfront park or a large recreation ground. The surrounding commercial blocks connect the Arcade, dining businesses and other downtown destinations.

Colorful Bridgeport’s calendar lists farmers markets, library activities and other events by date and venue. Farmers-market entries use McLevy Green; they are seasonal events rather than a daily grocery service. The Downtown Special Services District office is at 938 Broad Street and also publishes information about public art and district activities.

Distances are approximate. They are straight lines from the centre of Downtown, not travel distances, and a home at the edge of the area can be noticeably closer to or farther from a school.
