Historic residential blocks, Michigan Central and a greenway toward the river
About Corktown
Corktown’s residential streets sit south of Michigan Avenue, west of Downtown Detroit. Small houses and rowhouses reflect its immigrant and industrial history, while Michigan Central’s restored station and Roosevelt Park form a larger public destination nearby. The Southwest Greenway connects the station area with the west riverfront.
Small houses and rowhouses south of Michigan Avenue
Corktown grew from an Irish immigrant settlement in the 1830s into a home for successive communities working in Detroit’s industries. Its early detached houses and rowhouses were joined by modest Victorian homes with Italianate, Gothic and Queen Anne details.
The historic district lies south of Michigan Avenue and west of the Lodge Freeway. Most of its historic homes remain private residences.
The restored station and the public park in front
Michigan Central Station reopened to the public in June 2024 after a six-year restoration by Ford. The former railway building now anchors a technology and cultural campus, with ground-floor visits and guided tours rather than passenger train service.
Roosevelt Park in front of the station is a separate City of Detroit park. A 2023 redesign moved the road that had divided it, joining the grounds into one public space between Corktown and Mexicantown.
Michigan Central directs station visitors to the Bagley Mobility Hub at 1501 Wabash. Its visitor information identifies an entrance on the station’s east side and lists current access arrangements.
From Bagley Street toward the west riverfront
The Southwest Greenway follows a former railway corridor from Bagley Street to Jefferson Avenue, linking the Michigan Central area with Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park. Its northern entrance is at 2209 Bagley Street near Wabash; the riverfront entrance is near Jefferson and 10th Street.
The Yard outdoor graffiti gallery occupies the stretch beneath the Rosa Parks and Lafayette overpasses. A play area north of the Rosa Parks overpass includes climbing logs and a children’s zip line.
