Massachusetts Avenue’s cultural district, public art and the former Coca-Cola complex
About Mass Ave
Mass Ave is a cultural district centered on Massachusetts Avenue in Downtown Indianapolis. Its diagonal commercial street brings together shops, restaurants and performance venues alongside public art on the Cultural Trail. Bottleworks reuses the former Coca-Cola complex at the avenue’s northeastern end, while Chatham Arch and Lockerbie Square are separately named nearby residential neighborhoods.
The avenue and its surrounding residential streets
Massachusetts Avenue cuts diagonally through Downtown’s street grid, concentrating storefronts, restaurants and performance venues along its length. The district’s published map places the Old National Centre, the Athenaeum and smaller theatres around the corridor.
That map names Chatham Arch and Lockerbie Square as distinct historic neighborhoods beside the avenue. Mass Ave’s cultural district includes a wider collection of venues and neighborhood connections; its name does not replace those residential identities.
Ann Dancing and an artwork in a former mill alley
Julian Opie’s Ann Dancing stands where Massachusetts Avenue meets Vermont and Alabama streets. The four-sided LED column presents an animated figure and forms one of the Cultural Trail’s public-art stops.
Farther along the corridor, Sean Derry’s Chatham Passage occupies an alley off the 700 block. Its steel grate, underground vault, lighting and scent system refer to the nearby Real Silk Hosiery Mill, whose historic building was converted into condominiums.
Art Deco buildings at Bottleworks
The former Coca-Cola bottling complex anchors Bottleworks near the northeastern end of the avenue. Rubush and Hunter designed the Art Deco plant, which grew through later additions before the property became an Indianapolis Public Schools service center.
The hotel now occupies the upper floors of the former administration building. The Garage food and retail hall uses two garage buildings with terra-cotta facades and large roll-up doors. The photograph shows the Massachusetts Avenue exterior in May 2024.
