Five Points shops, distinctive historic buildings and a cultural trail toward the river
About Riverside
Riverside’s older residential streets and commercial districts lie southwest of Downtown Jacksonville. Five Points and the Park and King area provide separate commercial centers among older residential streets, while buildings on Oak and Margaret streets show a range of historic architecture. A local cultural trail links stories about the neighborhood with destinations including the Cummer Museum and Memorial Park.
Five Points and the Park and King area
Five Points concentrates shops, restaurants and other businesses around its distinctive intersection in Riverside. The Park and King area forms another commercial cluster farther into the neighborhood, with its own food, retail and service businesses.
Riverside Avondale Preservation lists these as separate business districts, alongside the Shoppes of Avondale in the adjoining neighborhood. The photograph records the Five Points streetscape at night in 2015.
Two different approaches to Riverside architecture
The sixteen-story Park Lane Apartments at 1846 Margaret Street were built in 1926, rising beside Memorial Park. Riverside Avondale Preservation describes the narrow building’s setbacks, upper terraces and Mediterranean Revival influences.
At 2063 Oak Street, Henry J. Klutho’s 1926 design for the Drs. Love & McGinnis Residence uses a five-sided corner site, arches and an entrance facing Oak and Goodwin streets. It originally combined doctors’ offices downstairs with living quarters above.
Sidewalk markers and stories on the cultural trail
The Riverside Avondale Cultural Trail uses sidewalk markers and a self-guided app to tell stories about local buildings, public spaces and neighborhood history. Its stops include the Cummer Museum and Memorial Park, connecting the Five Points area with cultural destinations toward the river.
The trail’s map provides the route and background stories. The Cummer Museum publishes its own visitor information for access to its galleries and gardens.
