City Market, the Missouri riverfront and streetcar connections
About River Market
River Market centers on City Market’s food shops and weekend growers north of Kansas City’s Downtown freeway loop. Older commercial streets lead toward the Missouri River, where the Town of Kansas Bridge crosses the rail corridor to an overlook and riverfront paths.
A working marketplace with a long civic history
City Market’s permanent shops bring specialty groceries, produce, spices and prepared food into the neighborhood throughout the week. The farmers market adds outdoor stalls on Saturdays and Sundays, with growers and vendors occupying the market’s open spaces.
The operator dates the marketplace to 1857, describing a site that accommodated commerce, horse trading and public gatherings. Its Fifth Street lobby contains a history exhibit, placing that earlier civic role alongside the food businesses visitors see today.
Across the rail corridor to the Missouri River
River Market lies north of the Downtown I-70 loop, close to the Missouri River. At the north end of Main Street, the Town of Kansas Bridge spans railway lines and the site of the original Town of Kansas settlement, connecting the neighborhood’s street grid with the riverfront.
The bridge leads toward an overlook and the Riverfront Heritage Trail. It crosses the rail corridor on the south bank, rather than carrying visitors across the Missouri River itself. Interpretive signs describe Westport Landing and the emigrants who arrived by steamboat before traveling overland.
Directional stops after the riverfront extension
The free KC Streetcar connects River Market with the riverfront in one direction and Downtown, the Crossroads, Midtown and UMKC in the other. Following the May 2026 extension, northbound trips continue to the riverfront instead of circling River Market and returning Downtown.
The City Market stop at Fifth and Walnut serves the marketplace, while River Market northbound on Grand Boulevard and southbound on Third Street serve different directions. The former River Market West stop is now named Delaware.
