Porter Ranch Neighborhood Guide: Schools, Parks, Housing, Safety and Everyday Life

Porter Ranch’s schools, park, library and shopping centers, with transit connections, dated housing indicators and sources on wildfire mapping and Aliso Canyon.

Porter Ranch occupies the northwestern San Fernando Valley below the Santa Susana Mountains. Its detached-home developments and hillside streets sit north of the shopping centers around Rinaldi Street and Porter Ranch Drive.

Local resources include Porter Ranch Community School, Holleigh Bernson Memorial Park and the library on Tampa Avenue. This guide also covers the nearby Aliso Canyon gas-storage facility and the official sources for its history and oversight.

Schools

LAUSD’s Resident School Finder identifies assigned schools by residential address. Charter enrollment and specialized programs have separate admissions procedures, described on the school pages below.

Porter Ranch Community School

Porter Ranch Community School (PRCS) is an LAUSD public school serving students from TK through 8th grade at 12450 Mason Avenue.

The school also offers programs including GATE and a Korean Dual Language Program.

The following percentages are from California’s 2024–25 Smarter Balanced assessments; they describe that testing year.

  • 80.82% of tested students met or exceeded the state standard in English Language Arts.

  • 73.06% met or exceeded the standard in mathematics.

Admission to the Korean Dual Language Program uses a separate LAUSD eChoices application. The school’s admissions page sets out program entry requirements and availability.

Youth Services / Beyond the Bell provides after-school programming for eligible students.

Castlebay Lane Charter

Castlebay Lane Charter is an LAUSD affiliated charter elementary school serving TK–5, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).

Its 2024–25 California testing results showed:

  • 74.41% of tested students meeting or exceeding the state standard in English Language Arts.

  • 71.38% meeting or exceeding the mathematics standard.

Parks and outdoor recreation

Holleigh Bernson Memorial Park is at 20500 Sesnon Boulevard.

The park includes a children’s play area, basketball courts, a baseball field, outdoor fitness equipment and restrooms.

Library and community activities

The Porter Ranch Branch Library is at 11371 Tampa Avenue.

Its October 2026 calendar lists storytime, STAR reading sessions, literacy tutoring for children in grades K–6 and technology help for seniors. Tutoring requires advance sign-up; dates and registration details are on the branch calendar.

The branch also provides public computers, Wi-Fi and collections in languages including Chinese, Korean and Spanish.

Birdwatching kits and a Neighborhood Science Kit are among the branch’s resources. For evening visits, regular closing is 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday closing is 5:30 p.m.; the branch is closed Sundays.

Shopping, dining and everyday services

The Vineyards at Porter Ranch brings shopping, dining, entertainment and health services together near Rinaldi Street and Porter Ranch Drive.

Current businesses and services include Whole Foods Market, AMC, Nordstrom Rack, Ulta Beauty, restaurants and cafés, fitness businesses, urgent care and UCLA Health Pediatrics, among other tenants.

The center also hosts a Sunday farmers market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., along with rotating community events.

Housing prices

As of September 30, 2026, Zillow placed the typical home value at approximately $1.25 million.

Redfin reported a median sale price of approximately $1.21 million for the three months ending September 2026.

Zillow’s home-value index and Redfin’s median of completed sales measure different things. The dates and methods matter when reading these neighborhood-wide figures.

The housing mix includes established detached homes, newer construction, hillside properties, townhomes and multifamily developments. Some communities have homeowners associations.

Metro Micro and commuter buses

Metro Micro is an on-demand shared ride service with a Northwest San Fernando Valley operating zone.

Current operating hours are:

  • Monday–Friday: 5:30 a.m.–10 p.m.

  • Saturday–Sunday: 6 a.m.–10 p.m.

The standard fare is $2.50, with Metro bus and rail transfers within two hours. Pickups and drop-offs use designated stops within the service area; the booking app shows available points.

LADOT Commuter Express Route 419 runs toward Downtown Los Angeles in the morning and back toward Chatsworth in the afternoon and evening, Monday through Friday. Devonshire and Mason is a listed stop; this is directional commuter service, with no weekend service. Reaching Devonshire and Mason is a separate leg from the express bus ride.

Local crime information

Porter Ranch is served by LAPD’s Devonshire Community Police Station, which also serves nearby communities including Chatsworth, Granada Hills and Northridge.

LAPD provides public crime information and crime-mapping tools that allow users to review reported incidents by location, category and time period.

When checked on October 18, 2026, LAPD’s Crime Mapping and COMPSTAT page carried a notice about updates to its data feed. Read the reporting dates and coverage alongside any map results.

Wildfire exposure

For Porter Ranch’s foothill and hillside properties, LAFD’s fire-zone address lookup identifies mapped designations and links brush-clearance and preparedness resources.

The Fire Hazard Severity Zone map uses factors including terrain, vegetation and expected fire behavior. These area-level hazard designations do not predict the outcome at an individual property.

For a hillside home, evacuation access, defensible space, home-hardening features and insurance availability are relevant alongside the mapped designation. LAFD’s resources explain those subjects and the applicable local programs.

Aliso Canyon history and oversight

The Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility is located in the Santa Susana Mountains north of Porter Ranch.

In October 2015, a well at the facility began leaking natural gas.

The leak was stopped in February 2016, and the failed well was subsequently plugged and abandoned.

State regulators authorized a limited restart in July 2017 after new inspection and operating requirements.

The CPUC’s October 2025 biennial assessment examined the facility’s role in gas-system reliability for winter 2025–26 and summer 2026, alongside longer-term scenarios. Its forecasts are not a record of actual conditions in those periods.

The CPUC’s December 2024 framework links a future closure proceeding to projected gas demand, reliability and rate impacts. It does not set a fixed closure date.

CalGEM and CPUC publish the regulatory history and operating decisions. This guide does not assess health effects at an individual property.
