About Old Village Historic District
Old Village Historic District sits beside Charleston Harbor and Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. Historic-house review, Pitt Street shops, a neighborhood library and bus service from Coleman Boulevard shape everyday use of its residential streets.
Historic homes and the local review district
Old Village’s residential streets run between Charleston Harbor and Whilden Street, south of Shem Creek. The town’s 37-block local historic overlay contains the smaller National Register district; the two designations have different boundaries.
Exterior demolition, construction and alterations within the local district require Historic District Preservation Commission approval before work starts. Applications go through the town’s OPAL permitting system. The town warns that its online historic property cards omit designation changes after 2010; Planning staff can confirm a property’s current status.
Pitt Street shops and the Village Library
The old street grid includes a small shopping district around Pitt Street. Village Library, at 430 Whilden Street, provides public computers, Wi-Fi, color and black-and-white printing, and mobile printing. It is a separate branch from the Mount Pleasant and Wando Mount Pleasant libraries.
Bus access from the Shem Creek end
Near the northern end of Old Village, CARTA Route 41 stops at Coleman Boulevard and Mill Street by Shem Creek. It runs toward Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park and downtown Charleston’s Mary Street/Meeting Street stop in one direction, and Wando Crossing Shopping Center in the other.
The linked timetable lists roughly 90-minute intervals on weekdays and Saturdays, with no Sunday service. Regular fixed-route cash fare is $2, payable with exact fare; a day pass is $7.
Public parks and the old bridge approach
Alhambra Hall, at 131 Middle Street, is a booked event venue with public park grounds. The town reopened the hall and grounds in August 2025 after adding sidewalks and an inclusive playground with wide ramps and sensory-friendly equipment. Dogs must remain leashed on the property.
Farther south, Pitt Street Bridge Park occupies the former crossing toward Sullivan’s Island and offers a waterfront walk and fishing pier. The town completed access improvements between Schweers Lane and the park entrance in June 2025, marking space for motorized and non-motorized travel and improving parking areas.
