About Naperville Historic District
Naperville’s local Historic District combines residential streets east of downtown with part of North Central College’s campus. Historic-home rules, overnight parking limits and nearby library services shape everyday life here.
Residential blocks beside the college
Naperville’s local Historic District combines residential blocks along streets such as Sleight, Wright and Columbia with part of North Central College’s campus. The city designated it in 1986. Its boundary differs from the larger federal historic district: federal listing alone does not place a home under the city preservation commission’s jurisdiction.
The 2026 city survey provides address-by-address photographs, significance ratings and recorded alteration approvals. For homes in the local district, exterior work can be exempt, reviewed by staff or taken to the Historic Preservation Commission, depending on the project. A building permit can still be required for work exempt from historic review.
Street parking is limited overnight
An on-street space is not a substitute for overnight parking at a house or rental here. Naperville generally prohibits street parking from 2–5 a.m. Exceptions include approved neighborhood programs and temporary police permission; a historic-district address does not itself provide an exemption.
Police may grant temporary overnight permission, with a limit of three requests per vehicle per month. Requests go through the city’s online parking-permission service or 630-420-6666. Approval is discretionary.
Nichols Library west of the district
Nichols Library, at 200 West Jefferson Avenue, is a downtown service west of the local district. Regular hours are 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday–Friday and 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday. Sunday hours are 1–9 p.m. September–May and 1–5 p.m. June–August; the library lists holiday and event closures separately.
Adult residents of incorporated Naperville can register online or in person. In-person registration accepts a current-address photo ID, or a photo ID with accepted address evidence such as a recent utility bill or rent receipt.
Small parks and nearby performances
Sally Benton Park is a small public space at 104 North Loomis Street within the mapped district. Central Park, at 104 East Benton Avenue just west of the district, has a loop trail between concert seating and a playground; its restroom availability follows a seasonal schedule.
College venues sit among these central blocks: Pfeiffer Hall is at 310 East Benton Avenue and the Theater at Meiley-Swallow Hall at 31 South Ellsworth Street. Both host theatre productions and other performances.
