Worker housing and hillside residential streets
Acushnet Heights Historic District covers residential blocks north of Clasky Common in New Bedford. Purchase Street forms much of its eastern edge; County and Summer streets frame the western side. Its parcel-by-parcel boundary also reaches toward Weld Street. This is part of New Bedford, separate from the town of Acushnet.
The National Register nomination records cottages, duplexes, triple-deckers and larger apartment buildings, with cross streets descending toward the river. Former Wamsutta Mills worker housing sits within this varied stock.
One managed rental option is Wamsutta Preservation, whose office is at 184 State Street. Its communities differ: Wamsutta Apartments includes all utilities, Hazard Court includes heat, Austin Court has two-level townhouses, and State Street has a courtyard and playground. Applications and current availability are handled by the operator.
Clasky Common at the southern end
Clasky Common, on Purchase Street, is the district’s public green space at its southern end. The city’s current facility listing shows a playground and basketball court, giving these residential blocks an outdoor destination without a trip to the waterfront.
A bus connection for groceries
SRTA Route 202 connects the downtown terminal with Market Basket and Lund’s Corner. Its August 30, 2026 timetable lists most daytime weekday departures about 20 minutes apart and weekend departures every 30 minutes. Weekday evening service is less frequent.
The supermarket is a scheduled timepoint, but MB-marked early trips skip it. Weekend service also starts later than weekday service. The operator’s route map marks the South Coast Rail pedestrian bridge along this corridor.
The harbor-side station across Route 18
For New Bedford Station, the pedestrian bridge provides a crossing of Route 18 toward the harbor-side rail facilities. Whale’s Tooth parking is at 532 Acushnet Avenue. Church Street Station is a separate North End access point, rather than another entrance to the same station.
MicroConnector offers rides between New Bedford Station and addresses in its South Zone for a $1 base fare. It runs Monday–Friday, 4–9:30 a.m. and 5:30–11 p.m., with no listed midday or weekend service. The app or 833-605-9506 can confirm whether a particular pickup address is covered.
