About Mill Street Historic District
Mill Street Historic District combines older homes with the former academy campus in central New Braunfels. Local historic-review rules apply to exterior work, while Mill Street Youth Center offers free after-school programs and tutoring for grades 6–12.
Historic homes along West Mill Street
Mill Street Historic District covers selected parcels along West Mill Street between Academy and Guenther avenues, with parts of West Bridge and Ferguson streets also included. The city designated it in 2011. The adopted parcel map is the useful boundary reference for a home here: a Mill Street address alone does not establish that it is inside the district.
German-Texan vernacular houses, Craftsman bungalows and Victorian-era homes give these blocks a varied residential character. The former academy campus is also within the district, alongside the houses.
Exterior repairs and historic review
For a home within the local district, the city requires a Certificate of Alteration before exterior work. Its examples include painting, roof replacement, foundation repairs, additions, landscaping and driveway changes. These requirements matter even when a project would leave the home’s basic layout unchanged.
Minor alterations may receive administrative review without a public hearing. The Historic Preservation Officer, at 830-221-4086, handles application questions and design-review requests. For an older house with an uncertain history, city staff also accept research requests with the address and a current front photograph; their published turnaround is up to 30 days.
Free after-school programs on the former school campus
Mill Street Youth Center operates at 430 West Mill Street, with its gym at 407 West Mill Street. Membership is free for New Braunfels-area students entering grades 6–12. A membership account and a parent or guardian’s permission and waiver are required.
After-school hours are Monday–Friday, 4–7 p.m. School-break hours and occasional weekend events are listed separately on the center’s calendar. Families can reach the center at 830-200-0505.
Tutoring and school-van access
The Learning Mill provides free tutoring for grades 6–12 on Monday–Thursday, 5–7 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.–noon. Families can register for weekly individual or small-group sessions; the center also lists drop-in homework help and collaborative study space.
Fall van service picks up students at Canyon, Church Hill, Oak Run and New Braunfels middle schools. Each fall and spring semester requires advance registration, and limited seats can lead to a waitlist. Families arranging an after-school routine can ask vans@thenbyc.com about a place on the route.
