Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects marshes, ponds, and shoreline habitat across the South Bay.

Trails and visitor facilities provide opportunities to observe migratory birds and understand wetland restoration in a heavily developed region. The Fremont headquarters area on Marshlands Road is one useful starting point for a visit.
Choose a specific refuge unit and check its access notices before traveling, since entrances and schedules vary. Song Sparrow Spur Trail is currently closed for levee repairs through November 2026, with intermittent nearby trail restrictions. Keep wildlife undisturbed and follow designated routes rather than entering closed pond levees.
Visitor details reviewed October 18, 2026. Check official visitor information for current access, admission, and operating arrangements. View on OpenStreetMap.
