The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden combines a recognizable glass dome with living plant collections and outdoor garden spaces beside the river.

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden combines a geodesic-domed conservatory with outdoor gardens beside the river. The dome’s tropical planting includes broad-leaved plants, a waterfall and koi, while its desert garden displays cacti, agaves, yuccas and other plants adapted to dry conditions.
The contrast between these indoor environments is part of the garden’s appeal during Iowa’s colder months. Outdoor planting adds seasonal changes beyond the dome. Classes and special presentations use their own programs rather than being available throughout every ordinary garden visit.
