Old Idaho Penitentiary

- Boise City
The Old Idaho Penitentiary preserves a former prison complex on Boise's eastern edge, with sandstone walls and surviving buildings that introduce a difficult part of the state's history.

The site operated as a prison from the nineteenth century into the 1970s, and its interpretation goes beyond the appearance of the architecture.
Choose a guided or self-directed visit according to the options currently available, and check physical-access information before booking. Some spaces can be confined or emotionally challenging. Leave time to read the interpretation and follow staff directions around restricted areas rather than treating the site simply as an atmospheric photo location.
