Poplar Forest preserves Thomas Jefferson’s retreat and plantation in Forest, west of Lynchburg.

The octagonal house and surrounding landscape provide a setting for examining Jefferson’s architectural ideas alongside the lives of the people enslaved on the property.
Choose a tour from the site’s current program, allowing time for interpretation of both the house and plantation community. Restoration and archaeology are part of the continuing work here, so available areas can change. Check visitor arrangements before arriving and consider the grounds and exhibits as integral to understanding the property, rather than treating the house as an isolated design object.
