Staple Bend Tunnel near Mineral Point, outside Johnstown, preserves an early railway passage associated with the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

Its stone portals and trail approach connect engineering history with the landscape of nineteenth-century transport.
The black-and-white archival photograph shows a tunnel portal. Use the National Park Service’s current trailhead map and access notices before arriving; the tunnel is reached by a trail rather than ordinary vehicle entry. Bring suitable footwear and lighting as advised, stay on the authorized route and respect closures or unstable rock.
