About Pearl District

The Pearl District combines former warehouse buildings with homes, galleries, shops and newer public spaces north of Downtown Portland. Loading docks and older street surfaces remain part of its character, while Jamison Square and Tanner Springs offer two contrasting parks among the surrounding blocks.

A warehouse district with a cultural life

Loading docks, cobblestone streets and former warehouses recall the Pearl’s industrial past among newer homes, shops and restaurants. Galleries and the First Thursday art walk add a recurring arts presence to the neighborhood.

Portland Center Stage performs in the converted Armory, with a main stage and a smaller theater. These cultural destinations sit within a wider residential and commercial district, close to Downtown and Old Town.

Jamison Square’s seasonal fountain

Jamison Square is at 810 NW 11th Avenue, between Johnson and Kearney streets. Its stepped stone fountain creates a shallow pool that fills and drains during seasonal operation, with trees and seating around the water.

The plaza also has public art and an accessible restroom. The 2008 photograph shows the fountain running; fountain operation varies by season.

Tanner Springs recalls the landscape before the warehouses

Two blocks north of Jamison Square, Tanner Springs Park uses native planting, a pond and a boardwalk to recall the wetland landscape that preceded the rail yards and warehouses. Its entrance is at NW 10th Avenue and Marshall Street.

A wall made from old railroad tracks incorporates glass images of insects and other small animals. The park’s water and planted areas provide a quieter landscape within the same network of neighborhood streets.
