About The Fan

The Fan’s older town-house blocks sit west of VCU’s Monroe Park campus. Broad Street brings Pulse service and supermarket options along the northern side, while residential parking permits apply to designated streets and addresses within two separate zones.

Older town-house blocks west of VCU

The Fan’s housing character comes from blocks of town houses built around the turn of the 20th century. Similar building heights and setbacks frame the streets, while porches, bay windows and rooflines vary between homes.

Parking permits cover designated addresses

Richmond divides the Fan restricted parking district into two zones at Lombardy Street. The city publishes eligible addresses by block and street side, so a Fan mailing description alone does not establish permit eligibility. North Lombardy is a neutral parking zone for holders of either zone’s permit.

Annual Fan permits expire June 30. The city’s page separates resident decals, temporary courtesy permits and annual visitor passes; the annual visitor pass is limited to resident property owners with an annual permit. These distinctions matter for renters planning regular guest parking.

Supermarkets along the Broad Street side

Kroger at 901 North Lombardy Street is north of Broad Street and lists grocery hours of 7 a.m.–11 p.m. daily. Its pharmacy keeps separate hours.

Farther west, Whole Foods Market at 2024 West Broad Street lists 8 a.m.–9 p.m. daily. GRTC identifies Allison Street station as serving the Sauer Center and the Fan, including grocery trips.

Pulse service follows Broad Street

Allison Street station serves the Fan and Sauer Center. VCU & VUU station at Broad and Shafer serves the Monroe Park campus; Science Museum station also serves parts of the Fan. The nearest of these stops changes with the residential block.

Pulse runs between Willow Lawn and Rocketts Landing with no fare required. GRTC lists ten-minute service at weekday peaks and fifteen to thirty minutes at other times, while warning that its fleet transition may temporarily change frequency. Eastbound platforms are on the southern side of Broad Street; westbound platforms are on the northern side.

Scuffletown Park is reached through the alley

Scuffletown Park sits inside a residential block between Strawberry Street and North Stafford Avenue. Richmond lists 404 Strawberry Street, in the alley, with sunrise-to-sunset hours.

The pocket garden has benches and picnic tables among lawns and planted beds. Resident-tended flower and vegetable plots occupy the northern end. It provides a small outdoor sitting space within the neighborhood’s closely built blocks.
