About Lavaca

Lavaca lies southeast of Downtown, east of King William and south of Hemisfair. Its historic streets are known for smaller late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century houses, with older commercial buildings near the western edge. Labor Street Park offers neighborhood recreation, while Yanaguana Garden is a separate public park nearby at Hemisfair.

Caliche-block houses, wood framing and bungalows

Lavaca’s early houses included small caliche-block buildings, followed by wood-framed homes as the railroad brought milled lumber and other building materials. The city’s history describes many houses chosen from pattern books rather than designed individually by architects.

Modest Queen Anne houses, Classical Revival porches and Craftsman-influenced bungalows contribute to the neighborhood’s streets. Most historic homes are relatively small, with older commercial buildings concentrated toward the western edge.

Recreation at Labor Street Park

Labor Street Park is at 436 Labor Street. The city lists a playground, a basketball goal, a multipurpose field, softball space and picnic seating among its facilities.

Outdoor fitness stations add another use alongside the play and field areas. These public recreation spaces sit within the neighborhood, separate from the larger visitor destinations at Hemisfair.

Yanaguana Garden just north at Hemisfair

Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair opened in 2015 and includes sand play, splash play and adaptive playground equipment. Its South Alamo Street address places this public garden at the Hemisfair edge north of Lavaca’s historic residential blocks.

The photograph shows the garden’s play area in December 2025. It introduces a nearby public destination; the houses and streets within Lavaca have a different setting.
