A coastal community with village streets, bluffs and hillsides
About La Jolla
La Jolla combines a coastal village center with beaches, ocean bluffs, canyons and residential hillsides rising toward Mount Soledad. The Village is only one part of the larger community, and nearby university destinations have a different geography.
The Village within coastal La Jolla
Prospect Street, Girard Avenue and Torrey Pines Road frame the Village’s commercial setting within the wider community. Beyond it, the coastline and the hills around Mount Soledad create different residential landscapes.
Planning boundaries and university destinations
The city’s La Jolla planning area follows the northern coast but does not simply encompass every address using the La Jolla name. Its community-plan description treats the Scripps and UC San Diego campus area separately from the surrounding city planning jurisdiction.
A library with local history and an innovation lab
La Jolla/Riford Library has a History Room with local documents and newspaper archives. An outdoor reading patio, community room and art gallery add other spaces within the branch.
Its IDEA Lab combines biology and digital-making resources with scheduled activities. These facilities provide a local learning destination beyond La Jolla’s waterfront visitor attractions.
