Moving to Sioux Falls: utilities, transit and neighborhood guides

Plan a move to Sioux Falls with current utility setup fees, waste-collection arrangements, transit fares and service limits, school lookup resources, library registration and researched neighborhood guides.

A move to Sioux Falls involves several separate local systems: City utility billing, private waste collection, mapped electric-service areas, school districts and Sioux Area Metro. Housing also ranges from central-city lofts to established residential streets and new developments on the edges.

Three neighborhood guides show different housing arrangements

Downtown: Phillips Avenue Lofts, public parking, Pomegranate Market and Downtown Library.

Garfield: Parkview apartments, Sherman Park and west-central residential streets.

Galway Park: local park facilities and nearby Galway Village’s detached homes, villas and townhomes.

Opening a City utility account has a fee and a renter deposit

Sioux Falls Utility Billing starts, transfers and ends City utility service at 605-367-8131. For a renter opening a residential City account, the fee schedule effective January 1, 2026 lists a $27 new-account fee and an $87 non-owner deposit.

The new-account fee is nonrefundable. The deposit is applied to the final bill, with any remaining balance refunded. Charges remain the account holder’s responsibility until they contact Utility Billing to end service.

City utility services include water, sewer and limited electrical service. The Light, Power & Traffic page links the utility viewer and electric-service-area map. Its daytime contact is 605-367-8600, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Garbage and recycling use licensed private haulers

Sioux Falls operates an open-market collection system: an occupant, owner or manager hires a waste hauler for garbage and recyclables. The City publishes a licensed-hauler directory with business phone numbers. This is a separate service arrangement from starting City water and sewer billing, and a landlord or property manager may be the party arranging it.

Bus and shared-ride service run Monday–Saturday

SAM’s fixed-route network lists weekday service from 6 a.m.–9:15 p.m. and Saturday service from 8 a.m.–6 p.m. SAM On Demand has a slightly different window: 5:45 a.m.–9:15 p.m. weekdays and 7:45 a.m.–6:15 p.m. Saturday. Its normal pickups use virtual street-corner stops, and each On Demand ride is capped at six miles. Longer journeys may combine a shared ride with a bus.

The adult fare is $1.50 for one ride, $3 for a day pass and $30 for a 30-day pass. Transfers between buses or between a bus and On Demand are free with a 1-day, 7-day or 30-day pass; otherwise, each leg requires payment. The SAM Transit app and web portal support booking, and assistance is available at 605-460-6256.

School and bus-zone lookup within Sioux Falls School District

The Sioux Falls area includes several school districts, including Sioux Falls, Tea Area, Harrisburg and Brandon Valley. Their geographic boundaries are recorded in the City’s school-district map data, using information supplied by the districts.

For homes within Sioux Falls School District, its public mapping tool accepts the full street address and shows school and regular-education bus information. The district explains that a boundary name containing BUS identifies a regular bus zone. Bus information appears below eligible school choices. The district’s main number is 605-367-7900.
