About Grand Central District
Grand Central District follows Central Avenue and the parallel First Avenues between 16th and 31st streets. Apartments, independent shops, galleries and LGBTQ+ gathering places share this corridor beside Historic Kenwood, with SunRunner connections to downtown and St. Pete Beach.
Apartment living along the commercial corridor
Grand Central runs along Central Avenue, First Avenue North and First Avenue South between 16th and 31st streets. Restaurants, bars, shops, galleries and services occupy the corridor. Its LGBTQ+ businesses and gathering places are part of the district’s identity and Pride history.
At the eastern end, 1701 Central at 1701 Central Avenue offers studio, one- and two-bedroom layouts. It is one apartment example within the corridor; Historic Kenwood’s older residential streets lie nearby to the north. An apartment on the commercial avenues has a different setting from a home on those interior blocks.
A supermarket trip beyond 31st Street
Walmart Supercenter at 201 34th Street North is a grocery destination west of Grand Central’s stated 31st Street edge. The operator lists grocery pickup and delivery services.
The district’s smaller shops and dining venues extend along Central Avenue. A larger food shop at 34th Street therefore adds a westward trip from an apartment near the 16th–22nd Street end of the corridor.
SunRunner platforms and evening service
PSTA’s SunRunner map marks stations at 22nd Street North and 22nd Street South on the parallel First Avenue corridors. The route links Grand Central with downtown, South Pasadena and St. Pete Beach. The boarding platform depends on the direction of travel.
Service runs 6 a.m.–midnight daily, every 15 minutes until 8 p.m. and every 30 minutes afterward. Friday and Saturday After Dark service maintains 15-minute frequency until midnight. Fares are cashless, with supported contactless cards, mobile wallets and Flamingo Fares accepted.
Gallery openings on Second Saturday
Grand Central participates in the city’s Second Saturday ArtWalk. The Arts Alliance lists participating gallery and studio openings from 5–9 p.m., with a guide to the venues and exhibitions.
Some studios open to the public only during ArtWalk. The monthly guide is therefore useful for planning a gallery visit, while the district’s restaurants and other businesses keep their own schedules.
Craftsman House in the dated photograph
The photograph shows Craftsman House at 2955 Central Avenue in August 2018. The porch, exposed brackets, street number and gallery-era signs are visible in that historical image.
Today’s district directory lists Craftsman Rose Garden as an event space at the address. The old gallery and café signs in the photograph describe the building’s earlier use; they do not establish current gallery or café opening hours.
