About Old Town
Old Town centers on Albuquerque’s historic plaza, with San Felipe de Neri Church, adobe storefronts and the Portal Market. Tiguex Park and Mountain Road’s museums extend the neighborhood walk beyond the plaza.
The plaza and its adobe streets
Old Town grew around the plaza where Spanish families established Albuquerque in 1706. San Felipe de Neri Church, completed in 1793 after an earlier church collapsed, anchors the square. Former homes, shops and government buildings around it now accommodate galleries, restaurants and stores.
Adobe buildings and covered portals give these streets much of their character, while Victorian buildings reflect changes that followed the railroad’s arrival. The plaza remains a compact starting point for exploring this older part of the city.
Handmade jewelry beneath the Portal
The Portal Market occupies the east side of Old Town Plaza. Local artisans sell handmade jewelry here, including bracelets, earrings and necklaces incorporating turquoise and other minerals. The city established the official market in 1991, recognizing a vendor tradition that had developed over decades.
Vendors choose when to sell, so the number of tables varies by day. The market’s setting beside the plaza makes it part of the same short walk as the church and surrounding storefronts.
From the plaza to Tiguex Park and Museum Row
Tiguex Park lies across from Old Town, with a walking trail, play area and basketball court. Nearby Mountain Road brings together Albuquerque Museum, Explora and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. The park and museum entrances give a walk here several destinations beyond the shops around the square.
On Central Avenue, the Old Town ART station is at 2024 Central Avenue SW. Routes 766 and 777 serve it, linking this part of Albuquerque with Downtown and Nob Hill; ART currently operates without a fare.
