About Mount Vernon - Belvedere

Mount Vernon–Belvedere brings together the Washington Monument’s garden squares, cultural institutions and residential streets north of Downtown Baltimore. The name is used here for the wider area represented by the Mount Vernon–Belvedere Association, which includes Mount Vernon and Midtown-Belvedere. The Walters Art Museum and George Peabody Library offer two distinct public destinations near the monument.

The Washington Monument and its four garden squares

The Washington Monument stands at the center of Mount Vernon Place’s four garden squares. Houses and cultural institutions face these narrow parks, bringing formal gardens, fountains and sculpture into the surrounding street grid.

The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy maintains the monument and squares through a partnership with the city. Its programming includes outdoor concerts, films, Flower Mart and the annual Monument Lighting.

The Walters and the George Peabody Library

The Walters Art Museum at 600 North Charles Street has free admission. Its main entrance is on Centre Street near Cathedral Street, the entrance recommended by the museum for visitors with limited mobility.

At 17 East Mount Vernon Place, the George Peabody Library’s reading room rises through five tiers of ornamental cast-iron balconies to a skylight. Public visits are free and limited to the ground floor, with a date-specific opening calendar published by Johns Hopkins.

A wider area than the monument squares

The Mount Vernon–Belvedere Association represents Mount Vernon and Midtown-Belvedere, with a service area expanded in 2019 to include adjacent blocks. That association footprint is broader than the garden squares and is separate from the local historic district and the smaller national landmark district.

Charles Street provides a commercial corridor through the area. Read Street mixes small businesses with historic residences, while Hamilton Street is known for early nineteenth-century townhouses; the Children’s Park at Calvert and Madison provides a smaller neighborhood green space.
