About South Berkeley

South Berkeley’s Adeline corridor connects Ashby BART with the Lorin commercial district toward the Oakland border. Daily services include Berkeley Bowl on Oregon Street and the South Branch and Tool Lending Library on Russell Street. San Pablo Park provides larger recreation grounds to the west.

House rentals and income-restricted apartments

A past AndreaRentals listing at 1615 Ashby Avenue shows one of the area’s older-house layouts: three bedrooms upstairs, two bathrooms, a yard, a rear sunroom used for laundry and two off-street parking spaces. The tenant paid all utilities. Its recorded June 2025 rent was $4,950 a month; the listing is now archived.

The completed Maudelle Miller Shirek Community at 2925 Adeline Street has 87 income-restricted apartments across from Ashby BART. Resident facilities include a community room with a kitchen, bike and automobile parking, and on-site supportive services. The city lists Resources for Community Development at 510-841-4410 for project inquiries.

Ashby BART: two different approaches

Ashby BART is at 3100 Adeline Street, serving the Richmond–Berryessa/North San Jose and Richmond–Millbrae/SFIA lines. From the east side of Adeline, a street elevator or ramp reaches the concourse. From the lower west parking lot, no elevator is needed to reach the concourse; elevators inside the paid area connect to the trains.

Daily-fee parking is listed at $3.80, with single- or multi-day reserved parking at $6.60 per day, including local tax. The station page provides parking maps and live elevator alerts.

Books and tools on Russell Street

Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch and the Tool Lending Library share the address 1901 Russell Street, but their hours differ. The branch opens Sundays, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; the Tool Library is closed Sundays. On Wednesdays the branch opens at 10 a.m. and the Tool Library at noon. The branch has no parking lot.

Berkeley residents or property owners over 18 can register to borrow tools. A current lease naming the tenant is accepted as address evidence, which can help a recent arrival register before receiving a utility bill. The rules allow up to ten items at once, normally for seven days. Tool inquiries go to 510-981-6101; the branch desk is 510-981-6260.

Oregon Street groceries and prepared food

Berkeley Bowl Marketplace is at 2020 Oregon Street, distinct from Berkeley Bowl West at 920 Heinz Avenue. The operator posts regular store hours of 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Saturday and 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Sunday, with holiday closures listed separately.

The deli sells hot food to go as well as refrigerated sandwiches, salads and sushi, with selections varying by day. The Oregon Street store number is 510-843-6929.

San Pablo Park’s larger recreation grounds

San Pablo Park at 2800 Park Street is a 12.95-acre recreation space in the western part of South Berkeley. It has lawns, picnic areas, restrooms, basketball and tennis courts, soccer and softball fields, and play areas for younger and school-age children.

Regular park hours are 6 a.m.–10 p.m., unless otherwise posted. The Frances Albrier Community Center is within the park, and the city offers reservations for outdoor picnic spaces and facilities.

Adeline changes planned for 2027

The Adeline Quick Build covers the corridor from Ashby Avenue to the Berkeley–Oakland border. The city lists the project in design, with construction targeted for early 2027.

Plans include pedestrian refuge islands, transit boarding islands and a mix of separated bikeways and bike lanes. One vehicle lane in each direction would be removed between Adeline/Fairview and the southern city border. These are planned changes, separate from street improvements completed north of Ashby in 2020.
