Clairmont apartments, Triangle Park and the wider South Avondale area

About Forest Park

Forest Park combines Clairmont Avenue apartment buildings with historic residential streets, Triangle Park and access to the Avondale park and library area. Birmingham’s planning documents use Forest Park–South Avondale for the wider neighborhood; the Forest Park historic district has its own mapped limits.

Clairmont apartments and laundry

Haven, at 3807 Clairmont Avenue South, has one- and two-bedroom rental layouts with different floor access and laundry arrangements. Dwell Properties describes upstairs one-bedroom apartments and ground-floor two-bedroom homes with front porches, separate dining rooms, front and rear entrances and a shared lawn.

Washer and dryer connections are listed only for the two-bedroom layouts. The operator also identifies gas and electric service, off-street parking and a rear walkway from the parking lot to the upper floor. For a one-bedroom viewing, laundry arrangements are a useful question for the leasing office at 205-957-6513. These building details do not establish current vacancies.

Groceries along Clairmont

Piggly Wiggly’s Clairmont store is at 3314 Clairmont Avenue. Its published schedule is 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, with produce, meat and seafood, dairy and frozen groceries. The store phone is 205-252-0684. The address is farther west on Clairmont than Haven at number 3807.

Triangle Park and Avondale Park

Birmingham lists Clairmont Park, also called Triangle Park, at 0.8 acres and Avondale Park at 36.5 acres. They serve different outings: Triangle is the smaller neighborhood green space, while Avondale includes the pond shown in this page’s archival photograph and bookable amphitheatre and villa facilities.

Common Ground Forest Park is developing a concept for Triangle Park that retains its lawn and shade while improving play equipment, surfaces and access. Its page describes worn equipment and uneven ground among the existing conditions; the design drawings show proposals, not completed facilities. Avondale event reservations go through the city at 205-254-2556, at least 14 days before an event.

Avondale Library after work

Avondale Regional Branch Library is at 509 40th Street South, at the southwest corner of Avondale Park. Tuesday is its later evening: the branch lists 9 a.m.–8 p.m., compared with 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday and Wednesday–Saturday; the county library directory lists Sunday as closed.

The county directory identifies public computers, Wi-Fi and printing at this branch. Its contact number is 205-226-4000. This is the Avondale branch south of the rail corridor, distinct from North Avondale Branch Library.

Historic district and renovation plans

The city lists both Forest Park and Avondale Park as local historic districts within the broader South Avondale/Forest Park neighborhood area. The city publishes a separate Forest Park historic-district map showing its designated extent around Clairmont, Linwood and Altamont roads.

Birmingham’s Urban Design staff reviews proposed work in local historic districts against the applicable design guidelines. The city supplies separate Forest Park and Avondale Park guidelines, a design-review application and a Certificate of Appropriateness application. Those are relevant starting documents for an exterior renovation budget, alongside the district map.

Check these on a visit

Try these in person before you commit to an address in Forest Park.

  1. At Haven, ask about laundry for the one-bedroom layout; only the two-bedroom homes list washer/dryer connections.
  2. Visit Triangle Park’s existing play area rather than relying on the proposed redesign drawings.
  3. For an evening library stop, note Avondale’s later Tuesday closing and its 40th Street South address.
