About Highland Park

Highland Park follows the curves of Highland Avenue past Caldwell, Rhodes and Rushton parks, with older apartment buildings and historic residential streets. Daily choices include Highland Avenue rentals, Clairmont grocery shopping and the design-review rules attached to locally designated historic properties.

Highland Towers on the avenue

Highland Towers is at 2251 Highland Avenue South. Its operator dates the building to 1947 and apartment leasing to 1951, offering one concrete example of the older apartment buildings along the avenue. The management contact is 205-933-6693, with office hours Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; the office is closed on weekends.

The property publishes a two-pet maximum for cats and dogs, with breed restrictions and a one-time, nonrefundable fee of $350 for one pet or $500 for two. It prohibits indoor smoking and identifies designated outdoor smoking areas.

Three parks along Highland Avenue

Caldwell, Rhodes and Rushton parks occupy separate curves of Highland Avenue. From west to east, the neighborhood association locates Caldwell at 26th Street South beside Virginia Samford Theatre, Rhodes at 28th Street South, and Rushton at 31st Street South beside Independent Presbyterian Church.

The association’s guide lists a fenced children’s play area and a basketball net at Rushton. Caldwell’s theater-side location supplies a separate cultural destination, while Rhodes is the park shown in this page’s dated photograph. For a reserved gathering or organized use of a city park, Birmingham’s reservations office is 205-254-2556.

A full grocery stop on Clairmont

Piggly Wiggly’s Clairmont store is at 3314 Clairmont Avenue, with published hours of 7 a.m.–9 p.m. every day. The store number is 205-252-0684. Its grocery offering includes produce, meat and seafood, dairy, frozen food and general groceries.

Historic homes and exterior changes

Highland Park’s local historic designation has a practical consequence for a buyer planning exterior work. The city’s preservation plan describes design review as part of the building-permit process for properties inside the local historic district. National Register recognition and local design-review controls are separate mechanisms.

The neighborhood association’s permit guidance includes exterior changes such as window and door replacement, and points owners to the city’s review and permit process. It gives 205-254-2224 for building-permit inquiries. For a renovation-minded purchase, the proposed exterior work belongs in the project review before assuming it can be carried out as an ordinary cosmetic update.
