About NoDa

NoDa’s North Davidson Street corridor grew from North Charlotte’s textile mills and their surrounding worker housing. Today its commercial blocks bring restaurants, music venues and public art into that older street pattern. The 36th Street Blue Line station connects the neighborhood with Uptown and the university corridor.

Two mill villages behind North Davidson’s main street

Highland Park Mill Number 3 and Mecklenburg Mill began construction in 1903. Their owners built worker housing across North Davidson Street: Highland Park’s village extended toward North McDowell Street, while Mecklenburg’s houses occupied Mercury Street, 37th Street and Herrin Avenue.

The commercial strip between 34th and 36th streets linked the two mill villages. Its stores served workers and their families, with apartments above some shops. These residential side streets and the larger mill buildings explain the neighborhood’s form beyond its restaurant blocks.

Murals and mosaics around 35th and 36th streets

ArtWalks CLT begins one NoDa route at Bloom, Osiris Rain’s mural on the side wall at 3200 North Davidson Street. Its pink lotus and portraits belong to the replacement painted in 2022 after the earlier mural was painted over.

Nearby, the walk identifies the Center of the Earth mosaic medallion and benches associated with artists Ruth Ava Lyons and Paul Sires in the 3200 block. Its route continues along North Davidson and the surrounding side streets, connecting murals with smaller pieces of functional street art.

36th Street Station and its own public art

The Blue Line’s 36th Street Station is at 434 East 36th Street. CATS lists a covered waiting area, ticket machines, seating and bike racks; its station directory follows the line south through Uptown and north toward UNC Charlotte.

The station also has commissioned artwork by Ruth Ava Lyons and Paul Sires, Carolyn Braaksma and Darren Goins. Windscreen glass, mosaics and bike-parking art make the transit stop part of NoDa’s public-art landscape.
