Brick residential streets, Schiller Park and a small garden on Beck Street
About German Village
German Village brings brick houses, narrow streets and small gardens together on Columbus’s South Side. Schiller Park provides a larger green space among the residential blocks, while Frank Fetch Park is a compact garden on Beck Street. Walking maps introduce the neighborhood’s architecture and the preservation movement that helped retain it.
A preserved neighborhood of small lots and narrow streets
German Village’s small lots and narrow streets survived an era when large parts of Columbus’s South End were being cleared for urban renewal. Residents formed the German Village Society in 1960 to promote rehabilitation, and the city established the historic district and its design review commission in 1963.
The brick duplex in the photograph, taken in April 2022, shows paired entrances, raised front steps and a small planted setback. The society links to walking maps and audio companions for exploring the neighborhood’s architecture from its public streets.
Schiller Park and its German cultural landmarks
Schiller Park lies between Jaeger Street and City Park, Reinhard and Deshler avenues. Its bronze statue of the German poet Friedrich Schiller arrived from Germany in 1891 as a gift from local residents.
The Huntington Garden Promenade surrounds the monument with plantings and quotations from Schiller.
A pocket garden on Beck Street
Frank Fetch Park occupies a much smaller site on Beck Street. Opened in 1966, it was designed with brick paving, walls, planters and decorative gas lighting inspired by nineteenth-century German beer gardens.
The park later took the name of the preservation movement’s founder. The German Village Garten Club and Friends of Frank Fetch Park help maintain its planting beds, benches and picnic areas.
