Welton Street businesses, jazz history and a neighborhood research library
About Five Points
Five Points extends northeast of Downtown Denver, with Welton Street as a historic business and cultural corridor. The Rossonian building and Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library connect its streets with Denver’s Black history, while shops, music venues and residential blocks make up the wider neighborhood.
The commercial streets around the Five Points intersection
Welton Street runs through Five Points northeast of Downtown, with businesses along a corridor that is only part of the larger neighborhood. The local name comes from the meeting of Welton, Washington, 27th Street and 26th Avenue.
Historic markers on the Welton Street Cultural District walking tour tell stories of Denver’s African American community. Shops, restaurants and music venues continue to give the corridor a public life alongside its residential surroundings.
The Rossonian’s jazz legacy
The Rossonian began in 1912 as the Baxter Hotel and became known for its lounge after the name changed in 1929. Black musicians stayed and performed here when segregation kept them out of other Denver hotels.
The building at 2650 Welton Street remains a landmark of that history. The photograph shows it in 2009, including the street scene of that period.
A research library on Welton Street
Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library is at 2401 Welton Street. Its second floor houses the Wilma J. Webb Archives and Reading Room, alongside the building’s role as a neighborhood library.
Branch resources include meeting spaces, computers, printing and programs. The reading room and third-floor history spaces have their own access hours within the building’s wider opening schedule.
