Older houses, Madeline Park and Mesa Street connections
About Kern Place
Kern Place combines older houses and curving residential streets around Madeline and Alethea parks with shopping and transit along Mesa Street. Mesa Brio stations and the UTEP streetcar route serve different journeys. Near the Cincinnati entertainment area, a home’s included parking and the street’s resident-permit rules are worth establishing separately.
Houses around the parks
Kern Place’s housing spans the bungalow era of the 1910s through ranch houses built in the 1950s. The Society of Architectural Historians describes the 1914 subdivision’s curving streets around Madeline and Alethea parks.
Mesa Brio and the streetcar
Mesa Brio’s route sheet identifies Mesita and Sun Bowl stations on Mesa, as well as Glory Road Transit Center. The corridor links Downtown and West Side transit centers. Those named boarding points give Kern Place residents a way to locate the relevant station along the neighborhood’s Mesa side.
The separate, fare-free streetcar serves the UTEP area on its uptown/downtown loops. It runs until 7 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6 p.m. Sunday under the posted schedule; Saturday and Sunday service begins at noon. That weekend start time matters for a morning trip. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day have no streetcar service.
Resident parking near Cincinnati
The city’s May 2024 assessment of entertainment districts documents a residential permit-parking system in Kern Place intended to keep venue patrons from occupying resident spaces.
The current city decal form asks for picture identification and proof of residency, such as a lease or an accepted address document. Planning & Inspections handles the application at 915-212-0104. For a rental, distinguish the home’s included off-street space from eligibility for a city decal, and use the posted street signs to establish the applicable restrictions.
Groceries on Mesa Street
Albertsons’ Mesa and Gregory store is at 3100 Mesa Street. The operator posts grocery hours of 6 a.m.–10 p.m. daily and offers curbside pickup and delivery. Pharmacy hours are listed separately, so a late grocery trip does not necessarily work for collecting a prescription.
