About Manhattan Heights

Manhattan Heights has Craftsman bungalows and several revival styles, with documented examples on Federal Avenue and Raynor Street. Memorial Park Library and Memorial Aquatic Center are on Copper Avenue. Exterior changes to historic homes require planning for preservation review, while local Route 35 connects the area with Five Points and downtown.

Housing on Federal and Raynor

Manhattan Heights includes Craftsman bungalows alongside Spanish Colonial Revival, Pueblo, Territorial and Georgian Revival houses. The Preservation Alliance’s guide identifies examples on Federal Avenue and Raynor Street, including a Craftsman bungalow at 3119 Federal and a Spanish-influenced Mabel Welch design at 3038 Federal.

For a purchase involving exterior changes, the city’s historic-property review is part of the planning. Windows, roofing, fences, driveways and landscaping can fall within that review. Many smaller projects can be approved by preservation staff, while larger changes may require the Historic Landmark Commission; the property’s historic overlay and proposed work determine the route.

Memorial Park Library

Memorial Park Library is at 3200 Copper Avenue. Its branch page lists English-conversation and citizenship classes, family and preschool storytimes, and a teen hangout.

When reviewed on October 19, the branch page still carried its September 8–October 15 roof and A/C repair closure notice. Reopening had not been confirmed. For current opening and program availability, call 915-212-0448.

Swimming on Copper Avenue

Memorial Aquatic Center is at 3251 Copper Avenue, near the library. The city lists a 25-yard pool with lap and recreational swimming during operating hours, and separate periods reserved for school practice.

The posted schedule has weekday morning sessions, Monday–Thursday evening sessions and Saturday mornings; Sunday is closed. Morning school-practice closures mean that an early opening time does not provide uninterrupted public access. The Memorial section of the city’s aquatics directory gives the session breaks and current contact details.

Route 35 and Five Points

Sun Metro identifies Memorial Park and Austin High School among Route 35’s destinations. The local bus links Downtown and Northgate transit centers through Five Points, providing a connection to other routes as well as a direct trip along the Dyer corridor.

The currently linked sheet shows roughly 40-minute weekday departures and hourly Saturday service. It is a regular local route, with its own stops and timetable, rather than the Dyer Brio service. The operator also states that Route 35 does not run on city-designated holidays.
