About Tower District

The Tower District combines Olive Avenue’s shops and entertainment venues with older residential streets, bungalow courts and small apartment buildings. The 1939 Tower Theatre marks the Wishon–Olive corner, with FresnoHOP providing an evening link to Downtown and Campus Pointe.

A Streamline Moderne landmark at Wishon and Olive

The Tower Theatre stands at 1201 N. Wishon Avenue, on the northwest corner of Wishon and Olive. Architect S. Charles Lee designed the 1939 building as a cinema flanked by retail wings. Its tall fluted spire, neon details and corner marquee make the entertainment district’s namesake visible above the storefronts.

The building later became a performing-arts venue after a restoration completed around 1990. The City of Fresno purchased it in 2022. The dated theatre photograph on this page shows its exterior in September 2011; the signs in that image advertise past events.

Residential streets around the commercial corridors

Tower developed as an early Fresno suburb, helped by a streetcar reaching the area in 1909. Houses were followed by apartment buildings and commercial clusters along Olive Avenue, Fulton south of Olive, Van Ness and Floradora, and Weldon and Echo near Fresno High School.

The city’s design guide describes a mix of single-family homes, bungalow courts, small multiplexes and courtyard apartments. Commercial frontages and nearby house-scale streets are both part of the district’s character. The Tower District name is more specific than the broader Fresno High–Roeding planning-area label.

FresnoHOP from the Tower Theatre

The Tower Theatre is one end of FresnoHOP’s regular evening route. Trolleys link the district with Downtown’s Cultural Arts District and Brewery District, then continue toward Fresno State and Campus Pointe.

The city lists Friday and Saturday service from 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with hourly departures from Tower and Campus Pointe. Rides are free. Separate ArtHop service information and holiday exceptions appear on the city’s trolley pages.
