Asylum Hill housing and everyday services
About Asylum Hill
Asylum Hill brings apartment buildings and restored historic homes together with Saint Francis Hospital and major insurance offices. Asylum Avenue has rental housing with shared facilities, while NINA develops homes for owner occupants. Street-parking permits apply to particular blocks, with allowances that differ even within the neighborhood.
Apartments on Asylum Avenue
Stuart Apartments at 887–897 Asylum Avenue is one rental example in Asylum Hill. Its community-supplied listing describes heat and hot water included, off-street parking and shared laundry. The listing identifies Maple Group Management, whose own website gives 860-488-9020 for its office at 887 Asylum Avenue, Suite 1.
The listing posts a $50 application fee per applicant and a $200 holding fee per apartment, credited toward the security deposit if approved. Those are upfront charges, separate from monthly rent. The written offer should establish the deposit, remaining utilities and parking terms; the listing is not evidence of a particular apartment being available today.
Restored homes for owner occupants
NINA, the Northside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance, rehabilitates historic houses and builds on vacant lots in Asylum Hill for low- to moderate-income owner occupants. Its work offers a different route into the neighborhood from leasing an apartment. The organization’s office is at 20–28 Sargeant Street; its telephone is 860-244-9390.
The 102 Huntington Street project records show the kind of work involved: restored window sashes, porch construction and interior rehabilitation, with updates through March 2026. This is a documented restoration example, not a current home-for-sale listing. NINA is the direct contact for its homeownership opportunities.
Street permits vary within Asylum Hill
Hartford Parking Authority lists two permanent permits and one visitor permit for Collins Street numbers 128–181 and Spring Street numbers 39–101. Sumner Street numbers 33–85 has one permanent and one visitor permit. Those zones renew in January.
Each permit costs $25 before qualifying waivers. Permanent permits need registration matching the resident’s identification and proof of residency. The program covers signed, approved segments; a nearby address does not inherit their allowance. A permit does not exempt a car from a snow parking ban.
Arriving at Saint Francis Hospital
Saint Francis Hospital is at 114 Woodland Street. Its patient and visitor garage can be entered from the main entrance on Woodland Street or from 341 Collins Street. The hospital directs patient drop-off and pickup to the garage’s first floor.
General valet is available weekdays from 7 a.m.–7:30 p.m. for a flat $5; weekend visitors use the garage themselves. Oncology, women’s health and labor-and-delivery arrangements have separate instructions. These are patient and visitor options, so someone relocating for a hospital job needs the employer’s staff-parking arrangements rather than treating visitor valet as an employee parking plan.
