About Kaimukī

Kaimukī combines the Waiʻalae Avenue business corridor with residential streets rising into the hills. Kaimuki TIMES, the Koko Head Avenue library and shared park courts provide local errands and recreation, while Routes 1 and 1L connect the corridor with Downtown and Kāhala.

Homes on the slopes above the business corridor

Kaimukī’s residential streets rise away from its small business district. The University of Hawaiʻi’s community study describes a mix of older homes and larger modern houses in hilly terrain. The Ocean View Drive photograph shows the residential setting toward the Koʻolau mountains, with houses continuing up the facing slopes.

For a home search, the street’s position above Waiʻalae Avenue matters as much as its distance from the shops. A grocery walk or trip to a corridor bus stop can include an uphill return. The Ocean View Drive photograph dates from June 2021.

A late grocery stop on Waiʻalae Avenue

Kaimuki TIMES is at 3221 Waiʻalae Avenue and posts regular hours of 6 a.m.–11 p.m. daily. Its late closing makes a grocery run after an evening shift or class possible without relying on a Saturday market.

The store also lists HOLO cards, postage stamps and a water-refill service. That brings several errands onto the same commercial corridor. Holiday hours differ: the operator lists Christmas Day closure. Store details were checked October 18, 2026.

Routes 1 and 1L take different streets Downtown

TheBus maps Routes 1 and 1L along Waiʻalae Avenue through Kaimukī toward Kāhala. The limited-stop 1L lists stops at Koko Head Avenue in both directions, making that junction a useful reference point for the business district.

Downtown, Route 1 follows Hotel Street; Route 1L uses King Street eastbound and Beretania Street westbound. A Downtown workplace can therefore have a different boarding street for the return trip. The current timetable, effective May 31, 2026, provides separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday schedules.

Sunday library access on Koko Head Avenue

Kaimukī Public Library is at 1041 Koko Head Avenue, with public computers, Wi-Fi and meeting rooms. Its regular schedule includes Sunday opening from 9 a.m.–4 p.m., while Saturday is closed.

Monday and Tuesday hours extend to 7 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday close at 6 p.m. Those evening and Sunday sessions provide alternatives to a weekday daytime visit. The library system closes on state holidays, so the posted holiday notices take precedence over the weekly schedule. Hours were checked October 18, 2026.

Pickleball shares volleyball space at the community park

Honolulu’s parks directory lists four pickleball courts at Kaimuki Community Park, with court lights. The pickleball lines are on volleyball space, so this is a shared court layout. Someone arranging a regular game needs to allow for volleyball use of the same surface.
