About East Rock
East Rock has older multifamily homes around Orange Street, managed apartments on Upper State Street and everyday groceries at Atticus Market. College Woods provides playground and picnic space, while Yale shuttles and public Via NHV rides serve different travel needs.
Multifamily homes and older residential streets
East Rock’s housing includes apartments in multifamily houses as well as larger apartment buildings. Along Orange Street and nearby streets, the Preservation Trust documents nineteenth-century frame houses, duplexes and brick rows. Bishop, Edwards, Nicoll and Foster streets reflect the area’s development from subdivided farmland into residential blocks.
The Orange Street National Register district covers part of this older streetscape. Its historic-district boundary is separate from the broader neighborhood shown here; the map uses an approximate neighborhood pin.
Managed apartments on Upper State Street
Corsair, at 1050 State Street, is one managed-apartment option on Upper State Street. Its operator lists in-unit washers and dryers, bike storage, onsite parking and EV charging. Balconies are available in selected apartments.
Those building-level facilities are useful distinctions when choosing between a managed complex and a unit in an older house. The operator’s leasing team provides current parking charges, apartment-specific features and availability; the amenities list does not establish that parking is included in rent.
Groceries at Atticus Market
Atticus Market is at 771 Orange Street, with groceries, baked goods and prepared food. This is the East Rock market; Atticus Bookstore Cafe is a separate downtown location at 1082 Chapel Street.
The market opens at 8 a.m. daily. Closing time is 7 p.m. Sunday–Tuesday, 8 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday, and 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Pizza service follows a shorter, separate schedule.
Yale shuttles and public daytime rides
Yale’s Blue and Orange shuttle routes connect East Rock with Central Campus and the medical campus. The free university service is for students, faculty and staff. Yale’s route maps and live tracker show the stops and current service, rather than one schedule covering every route.
For public shared rides, Via NHV’s service area includes East Rock. Rides run daily, 7 a.m.–7 p.m., at a $1.75 standard fare, paid by card. Book through the app or call 475-303-5467; pickup is at a nearby virtual stop. The booking service checks whether both ends of the trip are covered.
College Woods at Orange and Cold Spring
College Woods is the neighborhood-side part of East Rock Park at Orange and Cold Spring streets, where the ranger station is located. It has a fenced playground, basketball court and picnic facilities. The city requires dogs to stay leashed and closes the park from sunset to sunrise. This ground-level recreation area is a different destination from the hilltop monument and summit trails.
