Historic homes, varied rental layouts and Saturday groceries
About Wooster Square
Wooster Square combines nineteenth-century houses around the park with converted and newer apartments along Olive and Union streets. Saturday groceries at 511 Chapel Street, neighborhood parks and State Street rail access are part of everyday life here.
Older homes around the square
Wooster Square’s residential core sits east of downtown New Haven, around Wooster Square Park and its adjoining streets. The Preservation Trust documents Greek Revival houses, Italianate brownstone rows and later Victorian homes, with much of the historic development dating from 1830–1870.
Part of the neighborhood is a locally designated historic district, where exterior architectural changes go through Historic District Commission review. City staff at hdc@newhavenct.gov can confirm whether a property is covered and advise on the Certificate of Appropriateness application.
Converted apartments and shared-living layouts
Strouse Adler, at 78 Olive Street, is a former garment factory converted into apartments. The operator lists one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts, laundry on each floor and off-street parking for an additional fee.
Olive & Wooster, at 87 Union Street, advertises studios through four-bedroom homes, including townhomes, with in-unit laundry. Its separate co-living layouts provide a private bedroom within a shared apartment. The operator currently advertises a fall 2027 waitlist for co-living; its leasing team handles current room availability and move-in dates.
Saturday groceries at 511 Chapel Street
CitySeed’s 2026 Wooster Square Farmers Market is at 511 Chapel Street, identified in its event listing as the Conte/West Hills School parking lot. The outdoor season runs Saturdays, April 4–November 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Connecticut-grown produce and other food from participating vendors.
For the end of 2026, indoor sessions run on Saturdays, December 5–19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is closed November 28 and December 26.
The square, dog park and playground
Wooster Square Park is the neighborhood’s central green space. Union Street Dog Park is a separate destination on Union Street between Chapel and Fair streets, while Wooster Memorial Playground is at Wooster and Warren streets.
State Street Station for downtown rail access
State Street Station is at 259 State Street, on the downtown side of the neighborhood. It has ticket machines, bike racks and elevators; CTrail links live elevator status from the station page. Rail parking is in the separate State Street Garage at 270 State Street.
Hartford Line trains serve State Street and Union Station. Union Station is the main connection point for Metro-North, Amtrak and Shore Line East services, so the two stations serve different roles in a longer journey.
