About Algiers Point

Algiers Point sits across the Mississippi from Downtown New Orleans, with raised cottages, the Morgan Street courthouse and a ferry landing beside the levee.

Raised cottages and the riverfront streets

Algiers Point occupies the West Bank bend of the Mississippi opposite the French Quarter. Its older streets contain raised, mostly single-story homes, shallow front yards and corner commercial buildings; the Morgan Street courthouse is a landmark near the levee.

Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian buildings reflect the neighborhood’s 19th-century growth. Rebuilding after the 1895 fire added later house styles, so the older residential blocks include more than one period of construction.

The Canal Street ferry timetable

The Algiers Point–Canal Street ferry crosses the Mississippi to Downtown. RTA’s schedule gives separate departure columns for Algiers and Canal Street, with different tables for Sunday–Thursday and Friday–Saturday service.

RTA lists terminal renovation and overlapping barge work with completion expected in the first quarter of 2027. Its service-alerts page is the operator’s source for changes to scheduled crossings during this project.

Hubbell Library on Pelican Avenue

Cita Dennis Hubbell Library is at 725 Pelican Avenue. The City Archives records the Algiers Point branch’s opening in December 1907 and its return to the original building in July 2013 after major repairs.

The branch participates in the library system’s community puzzle exchange. Puzzles can be taken and returned without a library card or a formal checkout, using the system’s take-a-puzzle, leave-a-puzzle arrangement.
