About Marigny
Marigny lies downriver from the French Quarter, combining Creole cottages and shotgun houses with Frenchmen Street’s music venues and the shaded paths of Washington Square.
Cottages and corner shops downriver from the Quarter
Esplanade Avenue marks Marigny’s edge beside the French Quarter near the river. The neighborhood extends downriver through streets of Creole cottages, ornamented shotgun houses and mixed-use corner buildings.
Many houses sit close to the sidewalk, while some shotguns have small fenced front yards. The City’s historic-district guide places brick and metal industrial buildings nearer the river, alongside the district’s residential and corner-commercial streets.
Frenchmen Street’s music blocks
The best-known concentration of Frenchmen Street music venues lies between Esplanade Avenue and Royal Street. The visitor bureau lists Snug Harbor, Blue Nile and the Spotted Cat among its venues, alongside restaurants and cafés in older commercial buildings.
Beyond the music blocks, Frenchmen Street continues inland through other neighborhoods toward Gentilly. Esplanade and Royal identify the compact entertainment stretch near Washington Square.
Washington Square’s oaks and playground
Washington Square occupies the block bounded by Elysian Fields Avenue, Frenchmen Street, Dauphine Street and Royal Street. The City lists its address as 700 Elysian Fields Avenue and its area as 2.54 acres.
The park has a playground and mature oak trees, with space for sitting and community gatherings near the music corridor. The City’s listing gives opening hours of 8 a.m.–6 p.m. in winter and 8 a.m.–7 p.m. during daylight-saving time.
